WALKING HIS BEAT

LAPD chief Bill Bratton schmoozes with billionaires,
judges and A-list entertainers.
Just three weeks into the job, L.A.'s head crime-fighter,
Bill Bratton, is already making his mark on the party circuit,
moving from one fete to another where, it seems, everyone
is eager to win him over. In fact, the invites are so plentiful,
he said, "I actually lose track of the functions."

It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

On Thursday night at the Fulfillment Fund gala, hosted by
News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch and held on a
glamorously draped 20th Century Fox soundstage, Bratton
sat in the golden circle of billionaires. Haim Saban was just
behind him, Marvin and Barbara Davis at a table to his left.

Bratton's escort for the evening was entertainment
attorney Howard Weitzman,

Although they did not immediately suspect foul play, by the day
after Jackson's death the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD)
began to investigate the unusual and high-profile case.[34]

By August 28, the LAPD had announced that the case would
be referred to prosecutors who might file criminal charges.[6]
Because the LAPD did not secure Jackson's home, and allowed
the Jackson family access to it, before returning to remove certain
items, the department raised concerns by some observers that the
chain of custody had been broken.[35][36]

Bratton will step down as chief of the LAPD to take a position
with a private international security firm. The firm, called "Altegrity,"
is a global screening and security solutions company headquartered
in Falls Church, Virginia. Bratton will reportedly become CEO of a
new division where he will consult on security for police departments
worldwide.

An independent probe is needed into the relationship between
the departing police chief and LAPD monitor Michael Cherkasky,
who will soon be Bratton’s boss.
